Interview with SPIRITUAL FRONT
Entrevista en CastellanoOCTOBER 2014
"There is no point in hiding the bad side of ourselves"
With a wide range of influences including Pier Paolo Pasolini, tango or swing, these Italians have achieved a kind of unique and uncompromising style in modern dark folk scene. Paraphilia, religion, nihilism or biting humour are some recurrent issues arising from SIMONE SALVATORI's mind, responsible for the lyrics and the concept behind the band. ALFREDO VILLAESCUSA plunges into the depths of this peculiar spirit, a few days before Spiritual Front's performance at the VI SGM Fest.
First of all, what are you doing now? Are you writing anything?
Yes, sir. We are doing a new split album with Lydia lunch, preparing another alternative folk oriented EP and working on the new album.
The last album "Black Hearts In Black Suits" was very orchestral, is the new material going to be similar?
"Black Hearts In Black Suits" is a sort of parallel project, I didn't write the music indeed, Stefano Puri did it. He's doing also the orchestral part of the new album, but this doesn't mean it will be orchestral like "Black Hearts In Black Suits"...
For many people, one of your best albums is "Armaggedon Gigolo", would you try to capture again this feeling in the future?
Every album represents a certain mood, a certain mental estate, it captures a special mood. I don't know if it is our best album, I think it has its own special personality, but also a lot of defects. In some ways the new album will be more similar to "Armageddon Gigolo".
By the way, what do you think yourselves about that album? Do you consider it as one of the highlights in your career?
No... that moment didn't arrive yet.
I think you haven't done much promo about "Black Hearts In Black Suits", is there any reason behind it?
Unfortunately the promotion belongs to the labels, we can't do much, as musician, I can't dedicate myself to promotion, I'd love it but I don't have so much time... sadly.
"Black Hearts In Black Suits" could be compared to Death In June "Peaceful Snow", do you agree?
No, I don't think so, except for the fact that is piano oriented. "Peaceful Snow" has just piano and voice, "Black Hearts In Black Suits" was made by choirs, strings, piano, etc. Talking about composing, "Black Hearts in Black Suits" is extremely refined and professionally composed. I love "Peaceful Snow" but we can't compare them, technically speaking, but yes, probably the mood could be similar.
Was "Black Hearts In Black Suits" a kind of break in your career?
It's just something different but natural at the same time, it's not a proper break, cause we have already planned to do the second chapter.
I think you're touring right now, how is the tour going?
Thank God we usually play around, apparently people still love us.
What kind of shows are you playing? Are they all orchestral as in "Black Hearts in Black Suits"?
We did that just 2 times, it's not easy to move the entire line up, strings quartet, choir etc. It would be fantastic to perform with them more often.
Which are the main differences between Spiritual Front in studio and live, in your opinion?
The live approach is definitely more rock... I might admit that in studio we weren't able to capture that feeling, maybe because of the sound engineers we worked with, maybe the studio, in fact we decided to work with different people now in order to catch the live mood, to make it more 'live'.
Do you feel comfortable with the label "nihilist suicide pop" for your music?
Now is more suicide and less nihilist.
I think your music is for true emotional people, do you agree?
I talk about myself, my feelings, maybe some people feel the same, and this makes everything sharable, emotional, real, there's not such a particular secret, if you are real, if you are sincere, people feel it.
At the same time, there is a dark side, especially in the lyrics, do you like to keep this balance?
We are made by two sides, our personality has both sides, we desperately try to hide the bad side of ourselves, but it's useless, there s no point in hiding it. I love to talk about myself in that way too, it's like a cathartic process.
In Spiritual Front, as in other Italian bands, there is a strong connection with the world of cinema, how is it important for you?
I grew up with it, I can t imagine my life without it... It's a part of our life, try to imagine your life without any movie. It would be horrible, movies tells you stories make you think, teach you the good and bad things of this world.
You have also worked with members from Ennio Morricone orchestra, how was the experience? Would you like to work again with them?
We'll see, they are very expensive, I'm still in contact with some of them. But I love their capacity, I pretty sure we'll work again for the next album.
The song "The Gift of Life" appeared on the horror movie "Saw II", what do you think about your music being used for movie scores or other commercial events?
In general I think our music could fit perfectly for music scores or something like commercial or whatever.

Entrevista a SPIRITUAL FRONT
EnglishOCTUBRE DE 2014
"Black Hearts In Black Suits" podría compararse a "Peaceful Snow" de Death In June, ¿no te parece?
¿Qué tipo de shows estáis tocando?
