THE WAKE
CastellanoRusted (Single)
Though far less accesible and much darker than its predecessor, The Wake's new single "Rusted" bodes well for their future musical development. Even more, it somehow resuscitates the seminal "Masked" era while delving deeper into the sinister side of Rock'N'Roll - what always has been and still is the hallmark of the Americans - and drawing on The Cure-esque angular sounds to drape music in a genuine Goth atmosphere. Since its starting seconds, "Rusted" provides the sense of something eminently well-done. It begins to glide through perfectly timed, smooth percussion and baritone chords slip between Troy's breathy lines of singing. His astute voice games - finished with a delayed radiation effect - carry an intense sensory escape with it. Progressively, the rest of the sections flows into the track enlarging the haunting soundscape. Vapour could burn in air when the ringing, oxidized guitar melodies enter and, shortly after, the synthesized ones make their sparkling way to absorbe the dominant toxicity. Every element is properly placed and synchronized to provide gloom in full swing, weaving tales of acid rain, cowboys and reverb. Therefore, "Rusted" strengthens The Wake's goth magic through misty sweep and roll. And, as if this were not enticing enough, the single includes a remix version by no less than John Fryer, widely known for his production work - Depeche Mode, Nine Inch Nails and Paradise Lost, just to mention a few - and also as one half of the dreamy goth band This Mortal Coil.

THE WAKE
EnglishRusted (Single)
